Camu-Camu is the common name for Myrciaria Dubia – a small Amazonian fruit that has the highest vitamin C content of any plant in the world. It provides about 2 grams of vitamin C per 100 grams of fruit. .
Camu Camu and Vitamin C
Camu Camu fruit has the highest recorded amount of natural vitamin C known on the planet.
Oranges provide 500-4,000 ppm vitamin C, or ascorbic acid; acerola has tested in the range of 16,000 to 172,000 ppm. Camu Camu has 30 times the amount present in an orange
Camu-camu provides up to 500,000 ppm which is about 2 grams of vitamin C per 100 grams of fruit.
In comparison to oranges, Camu-Camu provides thirty times more vitamin C, ten times more iron, three times more niacin, twice as much riboflavin, and 50% more phosphorus.
Camu-Camu is also a significant source of potassium, providing 711 mg per kg of fruit. It also has a full complement of minerals and amino acids that can aid in the absorption of vitamin C. Alpha-pinene and d-limonene (compounds known as terpenes) predominate as the volatile compounds in this fruit.
1 teaspoon equals about 180-250mg of Vitamin C.
Health Benefits of Camu Camu
The primary benefit of the fruit is related to its high content of vitamin C. However, it is due to its complex blend of other natural vitamins, minerals and nutrients that the vitamin C is so efficiently absorbed in the pulp, and in turn, our bodies. Most synthetically produced vitamin C supplements contain only ascorbic acid, which, in isolation, cannot deliver the same level of nutrients as a natural whole-food source that is packed with supporting phytochemicals, antioxidants and cell-protecting flavonoids. Therefore, camu camu is considered far more effective than commercially produced vitamin C tablets.
The Camu-Camu fruit has a surprising range of claimed medicinal effects as measured both by traditional use and by the variety of phytochemical compounds which have demonstrated therapeutic effects.
Camu Camu is claimed to be good for/as:
Our camu camu is harvested directly into canoe boats during Peru’s rainy season – a challenging process because the land is flooded and a large number of the fruit are submerged under water. At our supplier’s collection facility, all fruit undergoes careful inspection and washing by hand before being peeled and juiced. The pulped camu fruit are then placed into a custom designed dehydrator, which slowly removes moisture whilst maintaining a constant temperature below 45°C. The dried camu camu can then be milled into a fine powder, which is meticulously tested before packing to ensure that it is free from any potentially harmful microbes, eliminating the need for heat sterilisation.
